Championship Round 5

We travelled to Shandonagh on Sunday to take on in St. Joseph’s in Round 5 of the Championship. On an ideal day for football, both teams were eager to stamp their mark on the day and this led to a cagey opening half.

Playing against the breeze in the first half Bun were first off the mark when Simon Moorehead after being set up by Aidan Finnan after a patient build up. Darragh Lyons doubled the lead after a fine shot off the right after he gathered from Shane McGovern after some good build up play from Finian Newman.

St. Joseph’s responded with a point of their own from a free before McGovern pointed after Finian Newman set him up. A fine two pointer from play by St. Joseph’s tied the game up but Barry O Mara responded quickly to point from play after a fine Bun move.

A flowing Bun move led to Luke Kiernan working the ball in from the end line for Darragh Lyons to fire over before a St. Joseph’s free on half time left the scores at 0:05 to 0:04 in Bun’s favour.

The second half started in pulsating fashion and it was and Aidan Finnan 45 that stretched the lead to two. St. Joseph’s responded with a point from play after a slow and patient build up. Midway through the second half St. Joseph’s made the most of an opportunist break to fire the games first goal.

John Kiernan made a strong and powerful run through the middle to fire over a brilliant point in response to the goal. However, St. Joseph’s made the most of their purple patch and fired in a second goal with ten minutes left to play.

Bun finished the game in strong fashion and but for some wayward shooting would have being closer. An Aidan Finnan two pointed free reduced the arrears to two but that was to be it as Eoin Gorman blew the full time whistle on the resulting kick out.
