Division 3 vs Shandonagh

We travelled to Shandonagh on Saturday to take on the home side in Round 3 of the League. On a bright day for football, Bun made a bright start and dominated large periods of the opening half but two quick fire goals saw Shandonagh lead 2:05 to 0:04 at half time. Darragh Lyons got Bun’s scores in the opening half, two frees and a two pointed free. A number of goal chances, after some great play were thwarted by David Scahill in the Shandonagh nets and had these gone in Bun would have been in a strong position.

The second half was a similarly tight affair but again two quick fire goals from Shandonagh ultimately put the game to bed. Bun had some great scores with Darragh Lyons and Cian Tighe kicking some excellent points from play. There were some fine individual performances on the Bun team and with it only being the second game of the year, team performances will only improve. The young players are finding their feet and acquitting themselves very well at this level.

Team: Alan Maguire, Enda Newman, David Newman, Gavin Lyons, Matthew Hope, John Kiernan, Finian Newman, Gordon Medforth, Simon Moorehead, Caolan Fulham, Aidan Finnan, Ken Conroy, Luke Kiernan, Darragh Lyons & Barry O Mara. Subs: Kevin Mitchell for K. Conroy, E. McGowan for E. Newman, William Medforth for C. Fulham, Cian Tighe for  G. Medforth, A. Whitney for D. Newman, Tommy Murphy, Paul Connaughton & Ronan Scally.

Division 7 vs Loughnavalley

We hosted Loughnavalley in the opening round of Division 7 on Sunday morning. Over the course of the hour there were periods of heavy rain and blistering spring sunshine. This was an open and entertaining game of football with both teams eager to play attacking football.

Loughnavalley led at the break 1:05 to 0:03 after playing with the elements. The goal was unlucky from a Bun point of view after Tommy Murphy got a finger tip save to push the shot onto the crossbar but the Loughnavalley corner forward was on hand to apply the finish from close range. That was the big score of what was otherwise an even affair. Trian Leslie and Dean O’ Brien were making notable contributions on their debuts from half back and corner back respectively. Cian Tighe with two points and a fine effort from the industrious Kevin Mitchell accounted for Bun’s three points in the opening half.

The second half saw the introductions of Enda Newman, Darragh Lyons and Jonny Nolan. All three made telling contributions as they combined to  set up Darragh Lyons for a quickfire 1-1 from play. A fine move ended with Luke Kiernan pointing after great work by him. A brilliant team move and a brave contribution from Leslie set up Caolan Fulham to fire to the net to see Bun hit the front in response to a two pointed effort from Loughnavalley.

As the game entered injury time, Bun held a one point lead but Loughnavalley worked the ball up the field to score a late goal to snatch victory on a score line of 2:11 to 2:09.

While both games over the weekend ended in defeat, there were a lot of positives to be taken from the weekend. Over both games there were thirty players togged out, with a number of these making their first starts for the Adult Team. While it takes time to adjust to the intensity of adult football the young players can be proud of their efforts and with continued training and matches they will hopefully make significant contributions to the Bun jersey for years to come.

Team: Tommy Murphy, Eoin McGowan, Andy Whitney, Dean O’ Brien, Gavin Lyons, Matthew Hope, Trian Leslie, Gordon Medforth, Caelan Fulham, Luke Kiernan, Kevin Mitchell, Darragh McCormack, Cian Tighe, Brian Maguire & William Medforth. Subs: Enda Newman for D. McCormack, Jonny Nolan, for W. Medforth, Darragh Lyons for B. Maguire, Eoghan Murray for D. O’Brien, Oisin Finn for C. Tighe and Conor Newman.

Adult Debuts

Well done to William Medforth, Trian Leslie and Dean O’ Brien who made their Adult debuts over the weekend. All three acquitted themselves very well and they will be eager to build on this progress over the league and into the Championship. Well done lads.
