Division 3 ACFL

On Friday evening last we travelled to Tyrrellspass to take on the home side in Round 5 of the League. In what were perfect conditions for football, Bun fought hard throughout to secure the two valuable points on offer with a 2:07 to 0:10 win.

Tyrellspass raced into an early lead and had two points on the board before Kenny Conroy scored from a mark after a great long ball in by Aidan Finnan. Further points from Aidan Finnan and Darragh Lyons kept Bun in touch. Another long ball from Finnan was expertly fielded by Ken Conroy before he slipped a superb pass into the path of Mark Donnelly to fire to the bottom corner of the net.

Bun were enjoying plenty of possession in the closing stages of the first half and further points from a Cian Tighe free (after John Kiernan made a strong run up the field from full back) and a great score from play from Darragh Lyons, after yet another turn over from the Bun defence, saw Bun take a 1:05 to 0:06 lead into half time.

Conor Lyons replaced the injured Kevin Mitchell at half time and made a telling contribution, making a number of high catches as well as some key dispossessions late on. Bun set about their work in the second half with the same determination as they finished the first half and Darragh Lyons pushed us three in front from a tricky free out wide on the right.

The key score of the game followed when the tenacious Bun defence turned over a Tyrrellspass attack before Darragh Lyons was followed. His quick thinking led to a long ball into Cian Tighe who made a brilliant run to gather possession before calmly beating his man and dispatching a powerful shot to the back of the net to put us 6 points in front.

To their credit, Tyrrellspass rallied well and scored the next three points before another Cian Tighe score settled the nerves. Tyrrellspass got another point to leave three in it with five minutes to play. These final minutes saw Bun defend very well and calm in possession. They closed out the game to record a three point victory.

This was an important win for Bun and all the players can be proud of their performances. Eoin McGowan, Gavin Lyons, Matthew Hope and Luke Kiernan had strong games in the backline while up front Cian Tighe put in a super performance with 1-3 to his name. The experienced players also put in steady displays to support these lads in what was a fine team performance.

Team: Alan Maguire, Eoin McGowan, John Kiernan, Gavin Lyons, Matthew Hope, Ronan Scally, Luke Kiernan, Darragh Lyons, Andy Whitney, Mark Donnelly, Aidan Finnan, Kevin Mitchell, Ken Conroy, Brian Maguire, Cian Tighe. Subs: Conor Lyons, Tommy Murphy, Brian O Hara, Luke Rafferty, Chris Cole.
