ACFL Division 3 vs The Downs

On Tuesday last we hosted The Downs in Division 3 of the League. We put in a strong first half performance and were perhaps unlucky to trail by two points at the halfway point at 0:11 to 2:03. Bun got two great goals in the opening half, the first coming after great pressure from Kevin Mitchell and Kenny Conroy to turn over possession to leave Barry O Mara with the chance to place the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

The Downs kicked some fine points from play and were on level terms before a quick fire 1-1 from Brian Maguire helped us into an early lead. Maguires point came from a mark after a long ball from Noel Yourell. His goal was the result of an excellent from Ronan Scally interception at midfield before some slick handpasses left Maguire with an easy palmed finish to the net. The Downs kicked the next four points before Mark Donnelly kicked a point after an excellent threaded ball from Barry O Mara. Bun then had a penalty well saved from the opposition keeper and they went down the field to score the final point of the half.

The second half was a disappointing affair for Bun despite showing great heart and determination. The Downs were slick in possession and punished us at every opportunity in the second half with some excellent points from distance. The lads tried hard to the end but couldn’t get to grips with a well drilled opposition. Darragh Lyons kicked our sole score of the second half.

Team: Alan Maguire, Luke Kiernan, Gavin Lyons, Eoghan Murray, John Kiernan, Ronan Scally, Matthew Hope, Noel Yourell, Andy Whitney, Aidan Finnan, Barry O’ Mara, Mark Donnelly, Kenny Conroy, Brian Maguire & Kevin Mitchell. Subs: Darragh Lyons for Mark Donnelly, Eoin McGowan for Luke Kiernan, Cian Tighe for Kevin Mitchell, Conor Lyons for Brian Maguire, Luke Rafferty for Eoghan Murray, Tommy Murphy, Brian O Hara, Padraig Keenan & Chris Cole.

ACFL Division 3 vs Kilbeggan

On Friday evening last, we played our second game of the week in Division 3 of the league. This was a very open game and the old adage of goals wins games proved to be very accurate. Kilbeggan scored 5 while Bun scored 3. This resulted in a 5:09 to 3:10 defeat for Bun, who fought gamely to the very end and can consider themselves unlucky despite the five point difference.

Kilbeggan started this game strongly and led by 3:01 to no score after 10 mins. To Bun’s credit they battled back gamely to reduce the gap to five points by half time. Points from Cian Tighe, Darragh Lyons, Barry O Mara and Noel Yourell helped to bring Bun back into the game.

The second half would be littered with goals from both sides as Bun set about reducing the gap. A flowing move forward saw the ball finished to the net by Darragh Lyons to give Bun great hope. Further goals from Barry O Mara and Ronan Scally as well as fine points from Matthew Hope, Brian Maguire and Barry O Mara were all part of a great collective fight back but Kilbeggan managed to get two more goals in the second half to leave them with five points to spare in the end.

This leaves Bun with one remaining game in Division three away to Killucan in two weeks time.

Team: Alan Maguire, Eoin McGowan, Gavin Lyons, Eoghan Murray, Matthew Hope, Ronan Scally, John Kiernan, Andy Whitney, Noel Yourell, Ken Conroy, Aidan Finnan, Barry O Mara, Brian Maguire, Darragh Lyons and Cian Tighe. Subs: Padraig Keenan and Brian O Hara.

Underage

Well done to our U11 team that hosted a game against Maryland Tang on Saturday morning in glorious conditions for football. Our lads got a great workout and took some wonderful scores. Well done to them all and thanks to Maryland Tang for travelling and giving us a great contest!

Gaelic for Mothers and Others

Training continues on Monday evenings at 8:00pm. There are great numbers attending and are thoroughly enjoying the weekly sessions. Many thanks to JP Reynolds for taking last week's session. If you would like to get involved contact Sinead on 087 7672529.

Westmeath County Fleadh

Well done to our Set Dancers who qualified for the Leinster Fleadh Final after winning the county title in Ballymore on Friday evening next.

Westmeath Senior Hurlers

Well done to Shane McGovern and the Westmeath hurlers on their fantastic result against Wexford in the Leinster Hurling Championship on Saturday evening. Shane lined out at midfield and played a pivotal role in helping Westmeath secure a famous draw against their lofty opponents. This is a significant result for Westmeath hurling and is testament to the hard work being put in at all levels.

Westmeath Senior Footballers

Hard luck to the Westmeath Senior Footballers when they lost out to Kildare by three points in the Leinster Semi Final. A bus load of our underage talent along with their coaches travelled up to Croke Park to support Westmeath. A great day was had by all despite the result. Well done to all who organised this trip.

Walking Track

This weekend saw more preliminary works carried out on the walking track. Well done to all who gave of their time to help with the ground works. The coming weeks and summer months ahead will see significant developments carried out to improve facilities for the local community.
