ACFL Division 3 vs Maryland

We made our return to the pitch for our opening game of 2023 when we hosted Maryland in the league on Sunday morning last. The lads on duty put in a great effort for their first game of the year and a late goal from Luke Kiernan ensured we split the points on offer. The never say die attitude was testament to the team ensuring they did not accept defeat, getting the equaliser with the second last kick of the game.

Maryland made the brighter start to this game and led 3-0 after 10 minutes. Cian Tighe got Bun off the mark before John Kiernan made a trademark burst from midfield to score a fine point from play after some good work by Noel Yourell and Ken Conroy. Kiernan was unlucky not to raise a green flag when his powerful shot crashed off the crossbar.

Maryland scored again from play before they seemed to lose their scoring touch when they hit a number of wides from scoreable positions. However, much of this was down to the close marking of Bun’s backs who made some vital interceptions and applies sufficient pressure to the Maryland forwards. Alan Maguire provided an invaluable platform for Bun to attack with his accurate kick-outs, a mixture of short and long. Aidan Finnan got Bun’s final score of the half with a great point from play before Maryland finished the scoring with a point from a free.

In the second half, Maryland got the first score before Cian Tighe converted a free after some great work by Finian Newman and Noel Yourell. Maryland took control of the game for the next five minutes and scored two points before Yourell followed up with a fine score from play after a marading run up the field by Luke Kiernan. Ken Conroy then converted a free before he followed this up with an exquisite point from play on his wrong side to really lift the team and home support. Enda Newman provided a great assist for this score and was testament to his hard work for the hour.

Maryland then scored the next two points to leave four points between the sides before Bun set about recovering the deficit. First, Conroy converted a free to leave three points between the sides before a fine team move culminated in Luke Kiernan applying the finish to the net to level the game up. After winning possession from the resulting kickout, Bun looked to be set to have the chance to win the game before the referee blew the full time whistle. Overall, draw was probably the fairest result.

This was a good start to the year for Bun and gives us something to build on when we play again next week. Enda Newman made his adult debut and performed very well. It was also great to see Finian Newman make his return from a long injury lay off to complete the full hour of football.

Team: Alan Maguire, Eoghan Murray, Joe Tormey, Luke Kiernan, Matthew Hope, Aidan Finnan, Gavin Lyons, Andrew Whitney, John Kiernan, Finian Newman, Noel Yourell, Enda Newman, Ken Conroy, Brian Maguire, Cian Tighe. Subs: Tommy Murphy, Davey Newman & Eoin McGowan.
