Underage Football

A fantastic start to underage coaching on Saturday in Bun! Well done to all the children who did brilliantly today and didn't let a little rain put them off all the fun!! It was great to see so many and a big welcome to all the new faces! Thanks to our coaches and parents - and a special thank you to Bunzer Bear who made a special appearance too!

ACFL Division 3 vs St. Malachy’s

We made the trip to Castletown on Saturday last to take on St. Malachy’s in Round 4 of the league. With St. Malachy’s going for four wins out of four, this was going to be a difficult assignment for us but the lads put in a tremendous effort to emerge two point winners. This was all the more credible given that seven of the starting team had played a Division 6 game the day before.

St. Malachy’s, with wind advantage for the first half, got off to a great start and led 0:02 to no score before Finian Newman popped up with a fine effort to get Bun off the mark. Barry O Mara equalised before St. Malachy’s got the next score. O Mara responded again with a neat point after some good work by Finian Newman and Andy Whitney. Both teams retreated to the dressing rooms for half time tied at three points apiece.

O Mara got Bun off to a great start in the second half with two quick points before the key score of the game arrived in the 45th minute. O Mara found Garvan Dolan in space before he rifled the ball to the net to stretch Bun’s lead.

To their credit, St. Malachy’s responded well and registered the next three points to leave two between the sides again. Yet again though, O Mara stretched the lead back to three before St. Malachy’s responded with the final point of the game.

This was an important win for Bun who now have four points after four games. It was great to welcome back Garvan Dolan and Simon Moorehead back into the blue and white jersey and both of these players will make a valuable contribution to the team for the year ahead.

Team: Alan Maguire, Conor Newman, Joe Tormey, Luke Kiernan, Matthew Hope, Aidan Finnan, Gavin Lyons, Andrew Whitney, John Kiernan, Finian Newman, Garvan Dolan, Noel Yourell, Ken Conroy, Simon Moorehead & Barry O Mara. Subs: Dave Newman, Cian Tighe, Brian Maguire, Eoin McGowan, Tommy Murphy & Enda Newman.

ACFL Division 6 vs Delvin

On St. Patrick’s Day we made the trip to Loughnavalley to take on the home side in our second game in this league. After a slow start we were beaten by the narrowest of margins in the end following a heroic effort in the second half. Going in at the break we were 0:07 to 0:01 down but we got to grips with our opponents in the second half.

Ken Conroy was our sole scorer in the first half. We were much more prolific in the second half with Conroy, Fintan Finnan and Chris Cole adding point early in the half. Finnan then expertly converted a penalty to leave two points between the teams before a Matthew Hope effort off his left was followed by a tidy Brian Maguire point. Unfortunately we were unable to draw level and Loughnavelley emerged one point winners.

Team: John Casey, Eoghan Murray, Joe Tormey, Eoin McGowan, Gavin Lyons, Conor Newman, Luke Kiernan, Fintan Finnan, Matthew Hope, Cian Tighe, Finian Newman, Enda Newman, Chris Cole, Ken Conroy and Tommy Murphy. Subs: Ger Brennan and Brian Maguire.

Westmeath Senior Hurlers

Hard luck to the Westmeath hurlers on Sunday when they were defeated by Galway in the league. They put in a battling display as always but Galway managed to gain the upper hand and come away with victory. Well done to Shane McGovern who lined out at midfield.
