ACFL Division 3 vs St. Loman’s

We made the short journey to Lakepoint Park on Friday evening last to take on St. Loman’s in our second competitive game of the new season. On what was a bitterly cold evening both teams will be happy with elements of their play with plenty of room for improvement as well.

The home team got off to a good start and had the first point on the board after two minutes. Aidan Finnan responded with a point for Bun a minute later after some good work by Brian Maguire in winning a high ball and laying it off.

St. Loman’s took the lead again on five minutes but Bun responded immediately. Good work from Finnan and Ronan Scally put Mark Donnelly clear to point. Scally himself was next to kick the lead score after another fine passage of play from Bun.

St. Loman’s equalised on fifteen minutes and took the lead on eighteen with a point from a free. Bun had defended brilliantly in this period and won some great turnovers. With sharper passing and shooting we should have been ahead at this point. St. Loman’s kicked the key score of the half with three minutes to the short whistle when they worked the ball forward to fire to the back of the net. They led at half time 1:05 to 0:03.

Bun emerged from half time and hit the ground running. Aidan Finnan won the throw in and found sub Kevin Mitchell who slipped to Ken Conroy. He took on his man and forced him back before striking the ball which the keeper knocked on to the post. Barry O Mara was on hand to apply the finish from the rebound to leave two points between the sides.

St. Loman’s weathered the storm and kicked the next three points over ten minutes. There were long passages of this half without scores mainly as a result of some great defending by both teams. As the game entered the final ten minutes St. Loman’s scored another goal before Barry O Mara responded with a point from a free to leave the final score 2:08 to 1:05.

Despite defeat, there were plenty of positives out of this performance. But for some wayward shooting Bun were well in this game throughout and will take plenty of confidence from the performance and know that with some crisper passing and shooting, there is lots to build on.

Well done to Jonny Nolan who made his debut for Bun in this match. Jonny is a Mayo man who has moved into the area recently and will add greatly to our panel.

Team: Liam Mitchell, Conor Newman, John Kiernan, Eoin McGowan, David Newman, Finian Newman, Noel Yourell, Matthew Hope, Simon Moorehead, Ronan Scally, Aidan Finnan, Mark Donnelly, Ken Conroy, Brian Maguire & Barry O Mara. Subs: Kevin Mitchell for Maguire, Enda Newman for Donnelly, Jonny Nolan for Scally, Cian Tighe & Tommy Murphy
